Remembering Kathy L'Ecluse

Our beloved friend, mentor, and WRC member, Kathy L'Ecluse lost her nine-year battle with breast cancer on Monday, October 10, 2011 after suffering complications from her cancer treatments.

Kathy gave so much to WRC, both as Director-at-Large and also as an active member. She wrote at least one book (Sci Fi) and was working on her book on the Vietnam baby-lift disaster. Her research took her to Vietnam to visit the people and walk the crash site, and to Washington D.C. to research the archives. She attended the Maui Writers Conference at least twice. She was in a prestigious critique group (James Rollins' old group) that met every other Monday in Sacramento.

Kathy brought lots of expertise and experience to WRC. She facilitated numerous seminars, and provided much leadership and guidance to the Board. She also worked hard behind the scenes as an editor of several books (including Janie Bess' Visions and Sheila Keller's Desperado Moon). Needless to say, Kathy was extremely generous with WRC, even helping out financially when times got tough.

Kathy leaves behind a lot of friends, not only at the Daily Republic, but throughout Solano County. In her job as consummate journalist, she touched the lives of so many people. She was rich in so many ways that many of us are not. She had true friends who loved and cared about her immensely. We were all saddened to watch her physical decline, but inspired by her plucky persistence, her determination to survive, and her courageous fight to the end.

Kathy's best friend and former co-worker, Marla Pugh, held a Memorial for Kathy and scattered her ashes in the San Francisco Bay, per Kathy's request. For additional information, you may contact Marla at murfym@aol.com.

Barbara J. Benninger's Book To Be Published

WRC member, Barbara J. Benninger's book has been accepted for publication by Shalako Press. No release date has been given.

The Shadow of the Future begins in Germany in 1942 where a family is caught harboring a Jew and must face the consequences. Helga, the heroine, escapes but she must first survive the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and all its horrors. The story depicts the perils of the Resistance fighters and of post-war America, where she finds the Holy Spirit who leads her to love and marriage. It is a story of high emotion, miracles, healing, and personal growth. Most of all, however, Barbara feels she was called by Jesus to write this book. It is ecumenical in spirit and a testimony of how God works in the Christian life.
